Nestled along historic St. John Street in Cospicua, Otto is a sanctuary of tranquillity set within a vibrant tapestry of history. Housed in a beautifully restored 300-year-old residence, this boutique retreat has been thoughtfully transformed into a refined Mediterranean haven—minimal in design, yet rich in character and deeply respectful of its storied past.
The visual narrative centres on the building’s original characteristics, serving as a testament to its enduring journey through time. Original arches have been highlighted through the use of architectural lighting, while the original limestone slabs were carefully restored and left exposed. Rather than concealing the building’s age, the design celebrates its imperfections, allowing the natural character of the structure to become an integral part of the experience.
Soft limewashed walls, warm neutral tones, and organic textures create an atmosphere of serenity. The use of natural materials throughout the project establishes a sense of continuity between old and new, balancing contemporary interventions with the timeless qualities of the original architecture.
Both natural and artificial lighting play a fundamental role in shaping the interior experience. As light moves through the spaces, it accentuates the textures of stone, limewash, and fabric, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that evolves throughout the day. This interaction enhances the tactile qualities of the materials, adding depth while reinforcing the tranquil atmosphere that defines the customer’s experience.
Throughout Otto, the design prioritises a sense of calm and connection. The layering of natural materials, muted colours, and carefully considered details creates interiors that feel both contemporary and timeless.
