The Theatre Next Door in Maghtab, designed by DAAA Haus, felt to us the perfect building to explore various complex layers of time, light, art and design that define our culture whilst nostalgically embrace a regenerated pig farm. What is old? What is new? How can light shine in the deepest darkness, and how can darkness be the light that defines a space? How can such a contrasting ambiance be captured in its simple form?

The concept perfectly capture the design and craftsmanship of this space by showcasing and underlining the spatial elements, light, shadows and surface textures whilst also give a true sense and depth on the use of the space. The society get a glimpse into understanding and appreciating the designer’s vision for the place, celebrating it as another significant art form.

The project involved a wide range of spaces, some old, some new, some dark, and some bright, and thus it required the interiors and exteriors of the building, bridges, structures, and spaces to use different techniques and design approach.

The space sees the merging of the old limestone characteristics with the new concrete and metal structures, kept at their original state manifesting the beauty of unperfect perfection, a true distinction of the different materials. Theatre Next Door is spread out on four different levels.

The internal landings throughout the building have been given punched skylights allowing natural light to flood in. The visitor experience is enhanced by proper, carefully placed way finding signage throughout. Interconnecting the different levels from the back of the establishment is a grand fire emergency spiral metal staircase which continues the contrasting highlight used throughout, whilst blending with the limestone finish façade.
